The wooden bridge spanned a narrow river, its planks slick with dew. Private First Class Miguel Reyes lay prone at the near end, his Browning Automatic Rifle trained on the far bank. Two hours until dawn. Two hours until relief. Two hours of staring into darkness, waiting for shapes that might be trees or might be men.

He heard it before he saw it-a soft splash, then another. Someone was crossing upstream, wading through the shallows to avoid the bridge. Miguel's finger tightened on the trigger.

A figure emerged from the trees, then another. Germans, by their silhouettes, moving quietly, trying to flank the position. Miguel could drop them both before they reached cover. It would be easy. It would be his duty.

But the first figure stumbled, fell to one knee. The second helped him up, supporting his weight. Wounded. They weren't attacking; they were escaping, trying to get home.

Miguel watched them disappear into the trees on the far side. He never fired.

When his sergeant asked later if he'd seen anything, Miguel said, "Just deer. Moving through the water."

He never told anyone the truth. But sometimes, in the quiet moments of his long life, he saw those two figures-one helping the other-and knew he had made the right choice. The war had enough killing. It didn't need one more death in the dark, by a river that had done nothing but flow.

Years later, a letter arrived from Germany, forwarded through veterans' organizations. It contained only a photograph of an old man and his brother, and a single line: "We remember the bridge. We remember you did not shoot. Thank you."

Miguel placed the photograph beside his bed and never spoke of it again. But he slept a little easier, knowing that somewhere, two brothers had grown old because one night, by a river, he had chosen mercy.
